While Faye Toogood created an intriguing space for Tacchini at Rude Arts Club with her irregular and elliptical shapes, sculptural elements mixed with delicate softness, which blended the British designer’s quirky spirit with fine Italian craftsmanship. Milan saw some wonderfully whimsical designs too, for a moment’s smile among the otherwise more serious discussions on machine intelligence and climate emergency. At the Triennale di Milano (until June 16, 2024) is an immersive site-specific video installation that takes you into the creative mind of the brilliant Italian architect Alessandro Mendini. The French designer said of the work, “it is a sensorial and sentimental plunge into the extraordinary universe of bizarreness, creative fantasy, and wit,” which pretty much sums it up. Elsewhere designers continued delving into the potentials of artificial intelligence in design and production.

There wasn’t an Entertainment Design program back then, but we had our own little group within the illustration department. After we graduated we kept in touch as friends, but we didn’t cross paths until three years ago. I also do a lot of teaching, which allows me to give newer artists experience on basic things. We do the majority of the heavy stuff in house, but we outsource design support. Back in 2007, I was working at NCsoft when it closed its studio in Santa Monica. So I went freelance and established Scribble Pad in 2008, initially just for myself.

As Magic Design Studios states on its website, a large portion of the development team is made up of ex-Ubisoft talent. As a result, the team and its developers have experience working on games in major AAA franchises such as Rayman, Splinter Cell, Assassin’s Creed, and Ghost Recon. Elsewhere, I contribute as an independent forecaster and consultant for several international brands through my company Design Talks. Made in limited numbers, the smart toilet is rendered in bright orange, and boasts an asymmetric shape that recalls edgy brutalist architecture. The shell surrounding its porcelain bowl is constructed with composite resin, with unexpected cut-outs and textured evoking natural rock for an inspired fusion of functional, and playful and with an eye on the environment.

“…Yang Lu, [who] is our creative director, [is] Chinese … I think maybe he wants to share this vision,” Alfroy reasoned. The story of Unruly Heroes is based off of the Chinese legend and 16th century novel “Journey to the West,” which recounted the pilgrimage of a Buddhist monk and his three supernatural disciples. Like the old Chinese tale, Unruly Heroes embraces the idea of four heroes meeting under different circumstances and coming together on a singular mission. Our mission is to crafting limitless adventures that come alive with every click and offer unforgettable experiences for players.

Our studio has developed for Universal, Disney CA, Disney Epcot and various groups within S. Scribble Pad Studios offers full service design work for all platforms in the video game industry including initial ideation and bluesky, production art and services, 3d assets and turn-arounds. Our focus is within all realms of environment design, character design and props & weapons. As with the game’s story, the four protagonists of Unruly Heroes also impact gameplay. From my brief time playing the game, I was able to switch around between the four characters at the push of a button.

A lot of freelancers are constantly working, and that takes a certain type of personality. Running a studio takes that same intensity, but you have to spread yourself out a lot more. Two of the three other artists here [Joy Lee and Shawn Kim] are people I went to school with at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

Unexpectedly, the images suspended in silky and translucent materials to evoke the sun’s universal appeal as well as tease us to read these images in unexpected ways. For the week, Milan simply buzzed with design activity—the vibrant districts of Brera, Tortona and beyond hosting pop-up installations and exhibits, talks and discussions, and with parties flowing into the night. It feels perfectly fitting to start the year with our inaugural LA exhibition, which promises a dynamic and thoughtful gallery program that is deeply rooted in the city’s cultural and creative ecosystem,” says Jen Roberts, Design Miami’s CEO. Our mission is to build exciting worlds and offer unforgottable experiences for players. As we neared the end of the interview, I asked Alfroy what she hoped would be people’s biggest takeaway from Unruly Heroes once they get the chance to play it for themselves.

That breaks down into initial pitch work, concept art and production art. I have experience working in advertising and marketing as an illustrator so I also offer services there. Although Unruly Heroes may be representative of the different skills and practices learned during the team’s collective time at Ubisoft, that isn’t to say the game isn’t unique. On the contrary, Alfroy stressed the idea that, creatively, Unruly Heroes is its own beast. As opposed to past Rayman games where cooperative play meant playing as characters with similar if not identical movesets, the game puts players in control of four different characters, each with their own distinct personality and play style.

In complete contrast, Samuel Ross’s Terminal 02 captured the imagination for its ginormous scale as well as turning the surrealist lens on the humble toilet. There were more subtle surrealist moments elsewhere with materials, color and shape playing tricks with the mind. Influential galleries will be bringing their A-game to the launch of Design Miami LA, with most of them showcasing a range of new works from notable artists and makers. The first-ever Design Miami LA will be held at the 1938 Holmby Hills estate, a historic private home designed by renowned architect Paul R. Williams. The expansive 30,000sqft estate was the former residence of late fashion designer Max Azria. “2024 is a year of evolution for Design Miami, as we continue to reach wider audiences through our expanding programming and ever-growing creative network.

Living Room Decorating and Design Ideas

how to design living room

"Typically, I think of living rooms as spaces that have more stationary furniture and may be a little more elevated," says Haywood. The focal point in a living room is often a fireplace, with a formal seating structure arranged around it, notes Peltier. "Typically a fireplace and a TV may or may not be part of the equation depending on the frequency of use and if there is another (more casual) family room in the house," she says. There are so many decisions to make, from choosing the right paint color to deciding on the layout of your furniture.

Small Living Room Layouts

We spoke with two interior designers who shared insight into what makes these rooms different and how you can style each of them. Though it often doesn't take up much space, lighting is an integral element of your living room's layout – and getting it right can really make the space. Jessica Cinnamon, interior designer and founder of Jessica Cinnamon Design, suggests decorating with mirrors, large-scale light fixtures and specialty lighting to make a grand statement in your space. Soft neutrals can be a great choice for a sophisticated and relaxing colour scheme.

Layer up lighting

Use neutral hues in textures that suit your design style to give a gray living room a more personal look. Plush blankets and layers of taupe accent pillows create a cozy, lived-in look without distracting from the modern feel created by the coffee table and abstract artwork. Picture ledges are an easy living room idea for an alternative to built-in shelves that create an accent wall.

HOW TO DECORATE A LONG LIVING ROOM

"Durable fabrics such as Crypton or indoor/outdoor options are a must-have for the family room," says Peltier. Above, extra seating can come in the form of ottomans and furniture that’s easy to move depending on whether you’re entertaining or just having a quiet night at home and want your fireplace clear. Pay attention to interiors that make you feel calm, at ease, and most like yourself, and channel them in your own home. Out of all the spaces you dwell in, your home is the only one you can control – take advantage of the opportunities ahead of you and design with mental wellness front of mind. Instead, design from a place that feels personal, and tap into what makes you happy and feel most balanced. For some people a dark and moody home feels oppressive, but for others it offers a quiet respite and a much-needed contrast to the harshly lit buildings we spend a lot of our time in,' she says.

'Working with a variety of materials offers the flexibility to create a visual story with textures according to seasons, allowing you to conjure different moods throughout the year. In fall, for example, you might layer in fur throws, wool pillows, and sweater knits through textiles conjuring a sense of coziness. While in summer months, you might want to opt for linen accents, cotton pillows, and airy window treatments that speak to the easy lighthearted vibe of summer,' says Amber. Any design element can introduce lush texture into your space, so get creative with the furniture and decor you choose. Amber says that even artwork on canvas, 'a fabric or rope wall hanging' or textured wallpaper can add eye-catching depth and interest to the living room. Add some beautiful bookshelf ideas or wall shelving near your desk to give it that private library feel,' says Ewa.

Choose a Monumental Coffee Table

No longer just reserved for period properties, paneling now comes in so many forms to suit all styles and can add just as much of an impact as decorating with bold paint or patterns. "Of all of the rooms in your home, this commonly used space should reflect you the most," says Gage. "You really can start with any piece, be it something you have and love or something you've been coveting and are ready to purchase," says Michelle Gage, the founder and CEO of Michelle Gage Interior Design. "For ease, it's helpful to start with a large one—like a sofa. That lays the foundation and helps to inform the furniture layout."

In this guide to living room design, we cover the main areas you will need to consider when it comes to making this area of the home work for you. Add a warm, rustic feel to your living room with a large stone fireplace. Forge & Bow opts for a cut-out to store extra fire wood and open shelving on each side. Now, when it comes to deciding on the layout first think about how you use the room.

When she isn't writing about interiors, she is renovating her own spaces – be it wallpapering a hallway, painting kitchen cupboards or converting a van. If you want to add a touch of luxury to the living room, shutters or Roman blinds layered over with lined drapes are a good choice. In a contemporary living room, shutters only are an easy to coordinate option that offers plenty of curb appeal, too. Plus, if you're on a tight budget, DIY-fit options are a much more affordable option than ones that are fitted for you. It’s easy to get caught up in colors and sofa fabric choices when choosing a sofa, but ignore the frills to begin with, focus on the more practical aspects.

Place a Decorative Screen Behind the Sofa

Design the layout to accentuate this feature, drawing the eye and adding to the room's luxury,' says Marie. It's easy to forget about your home's vertical space when arranging furniture and accessories. Whether you have stunning skylights, a spacious, high-ceilinged living room, or a beautiful light fixture tying the space together, there are a lot of luxurious design opportunities to be found when you simply look up. Mix various wood tones and finishes, introduce a stone vase or sculpture, and add softness with textiles. Here a blend of various textures is key, soft linen drapes, a cozy boucle chair, a plush wool rug, and a touch of velvet with a pillow.

Before that, I studied Journalism and English Literature at New York University. I’ve moved around quite a bit in the last several years, most recently making the trip to London, and love transforming each new space into a comfortable retreat that feels like home. When it comes to decor, I’m most drawn to unique vintage finds and calming colors. 'While you don't have to spend a fortune on every piece of furniture, investing in high-quality basics like a well-made sofa or a sturdy dining table can elevate the entire room's appearance. By implementing these layout tricks and design principles, you can create a space that looks and feels luxurious without breaking the bank, she says.

"Use these elements as a jumping-off point on where to go next!" Gage says. It is also helpful, notes Haywood, to determine which retailers you feel drawn to—something you will likely discover early on, especially when you shop for high-ticket items. You can't execute your living room design vision without first determining your budget, says Haywood. "Identify where you want to save and where you want to splurge," she says, noting that it's equally important to take stock of what you already have to limit excess spending. Step outside the living room and comb through your home, mining your house for items that might feel lackluster or forgotten that can be repurposed in your living room instead.

This space-saving layout allows for unencumbered views of the charing fireplace. Shelving that traces the perimeter of the room, meanwhile, draws the eye upward while allowing Ferrer to display his collections. Peltier agrees, noting that she often employs lighter fabrics in living rooms because they aren't utilized as much as other spaces in the home.

Bold colors, cozy textures, and modern design elements give this living room an eclectic feel. If you’re unsure where to start with your living room ideas, choose your largest piece of furniture first so you can use it as a starting point. Here, a leather sofa holds a collection of throw pillows whose colors and texture remind us of this Better Homes & Gardens Blue Diamond Geo Decorative Pillow ($20, Walmart).

8 Simple Steps to Arrange Flowers Like a Pro

flower arrangement design

To create a visually harmonious arrangement, select a vase that complements your flowers’ style and color palette. For instance, a handmade ceramic vase with earthy tones can enhance rich-hued blooms, adding warmth to your space. Consider the vase’s shape and height; taller vases can support long-stemmed flowers, while shorter, wider vases may be better suited for fuller, low-lying floral designs. At the Los Angeles School of Flower Design, founded by celebrity florist, Michael Gaffney, their students learn a large variety of different floral designs. Everything from traditional to contemporary design work is covered during their exciting 1-week condensed curriculum. The Los Angeles School offers a great fast paced curriculum for mastering the art of floral design.

He also mentions LACMA’s collection-sharing efforts with Los Angeles Unified School District’s Charles White Elementary School and its exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Fair. LACMA’s collection will be loaned to a new Las Vegas art museum. The deal isn’t a jackpot for L.A., which has long been promised its own satellites. We'll send you email updates, tips, special offers and notices when we're holding classes in your area. Even a single bunch of greenery or branches from a tree in your yard look striking in an interesting vase. The best way to arrange your flowers is to go with what fragrances you think work together and make sure it’s not overpowering.

If it's going in a smaller area, a shorter vase is a safe bet. If you're hoping to use the arrangement to welcome guests into your home, a taller vase may be a more eye-catching option. While there are no strict rules, we've highlighted some helpful tips to get you started. Keep in mind that this is a subjective craft, and you get to decide what looks good and what doesn't. Let these flower arrangement ideas serve as a jumping-off point for what may become a really rewarding hobby. Not only do they spruce up your home but they also serve as lovely gifts.

Incorporating Greenery and Foliage

Some designs will use all of these components, while others may only use two or three. Take a look at our flower delivery zones to see what kind of delivery options are available for your city. Search through our other floral products or contact us with any questions about our fresh flowers.

Plants & Seeds

"When you're doing an arrangement, you can't go wrong if the flowers excite you. Choose one flower you really love, then move on to the supplemental flowers or greenery." A family party in 2021, the first since the pandemic started, for which she arranged flowers with her sister Saidah Mayo (who runs a floral business in Omaha called Of The Vine Florals). “We called it ‘the everything we missed party,’” Yapp says. Flower arranging can be a form of meditation, says Yapp, who often finds herself gathering stems into a little bouquet at home even after a long day. "Flowers are still a way for me to appreciate what's here and now." Create your own magical floral moments with a few of her secrets and insights in mind. Many of the new hybrids grown today have lost their fragrance in the journey to becoming bigger, better, more disease-resistant, or have straighter, longer stems.

During this step, you can trim up some of the stems more, move flowers around, add more flowers or greenery, and make your arrangement look perfect. At this stage, look at the arrangement from all angles and see if any spots need extra attention. Egyptians during the Old Kingdom (c. 2686–c. 2160 BCE) put flowers into vases (as depicted in paintings and sculptures), while the ancient Greeks made and wore garlands. But flower arranging, as we know it today, really began in the 7th century. It was during this time that Ono No Imoko, the Japanese ambassador to China, founded the first and oldest school of floral art.

Autumnal Leaves

Combine smaller flowers in groups of three or five to create clustering, similar to what happens in nature. As a student at our floral design school, you’ll receive hands-on instruction from North America’s most award-winning team of teachers. Their record of design championships and successful flower shop operations teach real-world skills about the art of floral design and the operation of a retail flower business. With our small class sizes, you’ll receive individualized attention so you can hone the skills necessary to succeed as a career floral designer.

Make the most of foliage.

flower arrangement design

Mechanics aren't always necessary, but they're very useful when it comes to holding your blooms in place. "Use mechanics to create structure in your vessel and allow you to build an airy arrangement with less material," says Amy Gofton, founder of Studio Nectar. Common mechanics used by most florists include floral tape, chicken wire, and flower frogs. "The tape we use—usually clear or green—can be used to help break the opening of the vase into smaller segments to take your stems and hold them where you want them," says Cox.

Not to state the obvious, but the right blooms are the foundation of any great arrangement. Yellow roses complement the brass Tom Dixon pendants in this New York City apartment; snips of long branches add vertical interest. In an austere, modern kitchen outfitted with vintage steel cabinetry, foliage that has just started to turn provides an earthy accent. In the dining room of Alexi Ashe Meyers' upstate home, a table set with vintage China gets a jolt of modernity thanks to a cacophonous autumnal arrangement.

A modern arrangement can be a fresh twist on tradition, and many modern flowers delivery options cater to a contemporary aesthetic. Start with choosing your main color then layer different hues, from the deepest to the lightest tones, to add depth and interest. Remember to consider the visual impact of different flower shapes within your color palette. For inspiration on creating these chic looks with a single color, consider exploring modern flower arranging ideas. “Foliage is a great way to add movement and texture,” says Yapp.

By focusing on these dynamic elements, your floral designs will capture attention and reflect the sophistication and elegance of modern floristry. Wendy’s interests are very much in the arts – writing, design, cookery, and floral art. She also loves to spend time growing flowers on her small flower farm.

Some arrangements with very little plant material, often have a stronger rhythm than those packed with plant material. A focal point in a design is the piece that forces the eye to a particular area and anchors the design. Often the focal point is just above the edge of the container and will contain dominant material such as a large flower of at least three to six inches in diameter. A focal point can be achieved with material that has color, shape, texture, and size and is well placed towards the center of an arrangement.

The same can be said for varying textures in an arrangement. Using contrast in a flower arrangement can make the monotonous and dull, bright and exciting. One of the easiest ways to add contrast is with colour as can be seen by making use of The Color Wheel.

Festive arrangements with a mix of flowers and colors reflect the joy of the holiday season, while sleek, modern floral designs can cater to various tastes for less traditional celebrations. When creating modern flower arrangements, the choice of vessel is as crucial as the flowers themselves. It not only plays a pivotal role in the stability and display of your floral design but also adds to the overall aesthetic. Follow this guide for a step-by-step lesson on how to cut and design flower bouquets. On Valentine’s Day, red and pink roses symbolize love and romance, making them a classic choice for your bouquet. If you’re looking to stand out, consider mixing in lilies or tulips for added texture and color.

Go old-school with a Dutch-inspired tulipiere, or tulip holder. Historians differ on their original purpose to grow or display cut tulips, but they are charming regardless. @inspiredbycharm uses one to make floral arrangements easy. It’s time to accessorize pretty-in-pink pastels like floral designer @lou_lou.d. Take five stems of peony with light pink parrot tulips and a taller sprig of white or pink lisianthus to a blush vase.

More than any other shape, curves will automatically create more rhythm in being curved. Curved plant material is more playful and evokes a rhythmic dance structure. Color transition is often used to create rhythm by using a bridging color between two colors.

Because of the pandemic, mail-in voting was used widely and that contributed heavily to increased turnout. In 2020, 66% of registered voters cast ballots, the highest since 1900. Combined with the increasing Latino and Asian American population and a remigration to the South of young Black voters, particularly in Georgia, that has meant a reshaping of the electoral map. It's also because of the continued shift with college-educated white voters toward Democrats.

That summer, the 963,000-acre Dixie fire, which started July 13, became the first to burn from one side of the Sierra Nevada to the other, followed in short order by the 221,000-acre Caldor fire. If this type of synchronous activity persists in future years, it could force fire managers to reevaluate the reliability of resource-sharing arrangements, he said.

Smoke traveled across the continent, triggering air quality alerts across much of the East Coast. That fire had grown to 1,427 acres and was 13% contained Monday morning, officials said. The blaze generated a massive fire whirl over the weekend that sent smoke and flames aloft. On of the state’s highest priority fires, the multi-county Dixie fire burning in Northern California, has long since claimed the title of the second largest wildfire in the state’s recorded history.

That year, 21% of the land burned in North America was scorched by fires that started during and within the heat dome, with that figure rising to 34% when taking into account fires that started within 10 days, the researchers found. At least eight large lightning-sparked wildfires called the LNU Complex in the North Bay have burned hundreds of thousands of acres. Fires are burning in Napa, Lake, Sonoma, Colusa, Solano, and Yolo counties. They've ripped through more than 375,000 acres with containment Monday at 89 percent. He's qualified so far for the ballot in three states — Michigan, Hawaii and Utah. A Quinnipiac poll last month showed Trump's lead expanding from 3 to 5 points when RFK Jr. was included. Kennedy's campaign and a super PAC supporting him say he has enough signatures to potentially also get on ballots in Arizona, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Nevada, North Carolina and South Carolina. But the toss up states are expected to be close, within just a few points, in either candidate's direction. In addition to personnel, ads are the largest expenditure of a presidential campaign. To better understand the landscape for the presidential election with a little more than six months to go, here is our initial Electoral Vote map of the cycle.

The journey that ended with a man setting himself on fire on Friday outside the Manhattan courthouse where Donald J. Trump was being tried seemed to have begun in Florida, with a series of increasingly bizarre outbursts. If a tie happened, Trump would likely become president, because a tie would go to the House. Each House delegation would cast one collective vote for their states.

There are plans in the works to replace the bridge and the lifeguard headquarters underneath the pier, but that $40 million project is several years off. Last year, the city wrapped up a $5.6 million project to install new lines on the pier for potable water, wastewater, electrical and communications. The one there now is the sixth version, built in 1986 to replace one destroyed by storms. The response included 144 firefighters, 30 lifeguards and 32 police officers. A construction company on-site to dredge the harbor also sent a boat to help. Kwong also took more than $700,000 from a company that makes joint replacements and never reported that conflict of interest to the county, investigators found.

San Diego Gas & Electric and Sheriff’s Department helicopters dropped water from above, and the Coast Guard sent a cutter to douse with water from underneath. On the ground, fire crews pulled hoses down the 1,954-foot-long pier. Images shared on social media showed a large black plume of smoke rising above the end of the iconic pier, creating a spectacle for anyone in the area.

“A couple of days ago I really felt we were turning a corner with it,” operations section chief Eric Schwab said Sunday, noting that the fire had been creeping eastward at a pace of about half a mile each day. Acreage and containment updates for the Caldor fire were not available from state fire officials Monday night. Thousands rushed to leave South Lake Tahoe as the resort city came under an evacuation order due to the Caldor fire.

The university "supports free speech through open dialogue that is respectful and constructive," the officials said. Graffiti described as “hateful” has been painted on campus, the officials said. Work and classes will remain remote, and officials are considering keeping the campus closed for longer. House Speaker Mike Johnson called Wednesday for the resignation of the university’s president if she can't "bring order to this chaos."

Still, officials said, there is some concern that Southern California could start to see larger, more destructive fires as the season progresses, further straining resources already committed to the northern part of the state. The increasing population of white, college-educated voters in the state's Research Triangle continues to make the state competitive. But Republicans have won it in all but one presidential election since 1976. Forest Service announced the closure of nine national forests in the state during the week leading up to the Labor Day Holiday. Last month, a repair man reportedly spotted what he suspected to be a blown fuse while he was responding to an outage in Feather River Canyon off of Highway 70 in Oroville. Due to rough terrain and road work, the worker could not reach the pole for several hours, the utility said.

Catastrophic brush fires are occurring at an increasing rate not only in California but across the country. Hillside communities within Los Angeles are under continuous threat of a devastating wildfire. As this risk increases, it is important you protect yourself and your family by planning, preparing and staying aware. Through May 6, more than 1,500 wildfires have burned 6,700 acres in California, according to CalFire statistics.

"These temporary closures are necessary to ensure public and firefighter safety, as well as reduce the potential for new fire starts." The Caldor Fire, which sparked just one week ago, may be added to that list if it continues to rage out of control. Over the weekend, the fire forced thousands to evacuate and has already ripped through more than 106,000 acres. Opening statements will start Monday in the first criminal trial of a former U.S. president. The incident occurred shortly after a full jury of 12 people and six alternates had been seated in Trump’s hush money case, the first criminal trial of a former U.S. president.

Parsons said onshore winds pushed smoke from the end of the pier toward the shore. News briefing that although the fire was still burning, officials believe they have it under control. The size of the heat dome made it particularly troubling because it resulted in what the study authors called widespread synchronous burning, with many disparate areas igniting at the same time. That posed a challenge to fire agencies because they tend to ask for help from other places when they don’t have enough resources locally. Over a five-day period in June, locations in seven U.S. states, including California, surpassed all-time maximum temperature records, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

A lot of infrastructure and risk management systems are built around assumptions about how these events will play out, so if that changes, those systems become stressed, he said. The study adds to a body of literature documenting how the fingerprints of climate change can be detected in events such as heat waves, droughts and wildfires. For 25 years, Ruby’s Diner sat at the end of the pier, but it was reduced to takeout only when the pandemic hit in March 2020. About eight years ago, fire destroyed a long vacant Ruby’s Diner at the end of the Seal Beach Pier in Orange County. The voting delegations would be those voted into the House after this year's congressional elections. The country came thisclose in 1876, and 2000 was within 5 electoral votes... As the map stands, if Trump and Biden win the states leaning in their direction, Trump would need to win 35 electoral votes from the toss ups to get to 270, and Biden would need 44. To this point, the Biden campaign has spent almost nothing in ads on the state and the polling has, to this point, shown Trump well ahead. This year's election is also going to be different from 2020 in a very big way.

The fire started at the front of the porch, engulfed the nearby garage and quickly spread upstairs. Azzarrello worked as operations director for the congressional campaign of U.S. Rep. Caldor fire crews remain in ‘pretty good firefight’ as they brace for red flag conditions

At one point, he said, officials feared the whole pier could be lost to fire, and he credited the large response from other agencies for helping save it. Most of the damage appears to be contained to the “hammerhead” shape at the end of the pier and stretching about 15 feet down the walkway toward the shore, the fire chief said. The Los Angeles Police Department arrested approximately 50 protestors at the University of Southern California after campus police gave a dispersal order to demonstrators, according to a CNN crew at the scene.

Her kids, ages 2 and 7, were transported to the hospital in critical condition when they were pulled from the burning house last week. The 7-year-old was on life support, an email sent by his school principal at Holmes Elementary said. In Southern California, the French Fire, burning northeast of Bakersfield in Kern County, also exploded over the weekend, charring more than acres. The fire spurred evacuation orders for the entire town of Wofford Heights Sunday night. The second-largest active blaze in the state, the Monument Fire, has burned 150,011 acres in the Trinity National Forest and was 20 percent contained Monday, Cal Fire reported.

Campus police announced earlier that anyone who stayed in the area would be subject to criminal trespass laws. At one point during the demonstrations, tensions escalated as protesters refused to relocate and remove their tents and other prohibited items, a university official said. The Los Angeles Police Department said 93 people were arrested on suspicion of trespassing during Wednesday's demonstrations at the University of Southern California. Forecasters are anticipating a late start to California’s wildfire season, but they can’t yet say whether it will be severe.

Students taking part in after-school activities at Laguna Beach High School were also evacuated, according to the school district. There is no containment, but wind speeds are expected to decrease Thursday after 20- to 30-mph gusts pushed flames into the hilltop neighborhood. Meanwhile, the French fire, in Kern County, and the Monument fire, in Trinity County, continued to challenge beleaguered fire crews, although firefighters were starting to gain some control. As of Monday morning, the French fire had grown to 25,264 acres and was 26% contained. The strong winds will also contribute to heavy smoke in some areas near the fire, including Susanville and Burney, officials said.

Explaining the Whys Behind Bad Design With Examples

Bad Design Can Kill

Dieter’s iconic work at Braun and Vitsoe touched the lives of millions of people. In fact, the computer or phone you're reading this on looks the way it does because of Dieter Rams. The key elements of a modern web design include usability, speed, and accessibility. Besides these general elements, unique typography, engaging and responsive hero images, and background videos are key design elements of a modern web design. Too many different fonts displayed on the site’s homepage make it hard for users and screen readers to focus on specific texts. The footer section is empty, with no information, logo, or icon visible in sight, a complete waste of space.

Movie websites inform visitors about a film and possibly persuade them to purchase tickets or film rights. However, if a movie website appears outdated, unprofessional, or difficult to navigate, visitors may exit before they get the information they desire. For example, say you log in and want to change your password. You might understand that you can click "My Orders," "My Favorites," or "Sign Out," but these won't provide an option to change your password. Bad Design is an alternative thinking tool that allows participants to reverse or defy the conventional design process to arrive at a favorable output, often termed as good design. The most important lesson to learn from this is that learning Photoshop by watching a couple of tutorials on YouTube does not make you a professional designer.

Lack of accessibility

As soon as you see the menu (which contains an image of the actual product), it immediately comes to life. You start the design as you would with any other and immediately communicate what the product is and why people should want it. Celebrity Couch was a competition where the winners get to travel to Riga. Maybe my geography is bad but I couldn’t find out where exactly in the world this competition prize is located from their website. Sure, it says Riga but I had no idea where that was and they certainly didn’t have any interest in helping me locate it. If I have to Google a simple thing like that, then the designer hasn’t paid adequate attention to detail.

An example of a bad website design, Process Bulletin is minimalistic, sticking to a straightforward website design. Leaving no room for visitors to process information, several news and stories are jam-packed on the site’s homepage alongside a few images. Timeless Pieces is a brand offering an exciting, unique, and meticulous collection of vintage, retro, second-hand, and handmade items. A bad website design example, the Timeless Pieces website stands out largely due to the inconsistent branding displayed on its site. You can’t help but notice the display of the site’s content on the plain background in a centralized three-column layout with the background image still visible.

This example perfectly highlights the pitfalls of overloading a screen with too much information. While each element might hold individual importance, they collectively create a jumble of visuals that can frustrate users. A successful UI should seamlessly guide the user's journey, not challenge them to sift through a maze of options.

Thus, it forces the users to scroll and adjust to access essential controls. Visitors come to your website to make a purchase, learn about your product, sign up for a newsletter, or apply for a job. Bad website design is likely to blame if they have difficulty accomplishing any of these tasks. Bad usability websites could cause significant frustration and even mean your visitors will exit quickly. This showcase of bad examples of design is not just about having a good laugh, but it’s about learning to avoid mistakes.

Bad design can have a negative impact on the user experience and the overall perception of a product or service. By avoiding these common design mistakes and failures, you can create designs that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and user-friendly. In this course, you will gain a holistic understanding of visual design and increase your knowledge of visual principles, color theory, typography, grid systems and history. You’ll also learn why visual design is so important, how history influences the present, and practical applications to improve your own work. These insights will help you to achieve the best possible user experience.

You wouldn’t like to eat mystery meat—and similarly, your users wouldn’t like to click on mystery links. As you can see, this tableau gives precious little indication as to where to go. Instead, nine images just sit, leaving some of us pondering an enigma rather than interacting with a page.

Dieter Rams’s 10 Principles of Good Design are proof of his minimalist and functional approach to design, but, more than that, they are proof of his professional stand. This is why we can easily make these principles our values, our philosophy of how design — hence, UX design — should be for any product or service. As something for designers to practice, it begs the question of what it involves as a clear set of elements. Design is a field where we understand, communicate with and enhance the world around us, particularly by improving people’s lives.

Penny Juice is a great example of a bad and unprofessional website. And if it weren’t for the name, you’d have difficulty figuring out what this business does. I hardly believe that I’m adding Yale School Of Art to the list of the worst websites (in the world). If they’d only rely on the website, the school wouldn’t be as popular as it is.

Since most users expect something to happen when they hit a button, the lack of system response could be confusing. The good design, on the other hand,  displays a small animation to confirm the action. The proposed parking sign has a user-centered approach that meets drivers' simple desire to know if they can park in a given location. This information is effectively communicated through the sign's use of visual cues vs. text in the previous version. Nilli's sign includes green to indicate parking availability and red to indicate no parking.

This problem becomes dangerous when designers seemingly cannot get enough of animations. As of 2016, Vladyslav’s animation would receive more than 500 likes and 8,000 views. This shows a misguided appreciation that designers have towards animation for animation’s sake.

Okay—popping my Santa’s Little Movie Critic hat back on, because I can also say glowing things about the straight parts of this movie too. Mike and Andi are a charming pair, and watching their lifelong love story unfold via Rashomon style flashbacks had me fully invested in the straights. And, oh my god, the entire storyline with the parents had me in genuine suspense—to a degree that I have absolutely never felt while watching a Hallmark movie. The movie is a delight through and through, and—as if that’s not enough—it’s one that will actually change the world for the better. Every year we don our gay apparel (still too tight from Thanksgiving dinner) for this Walk of Fame tradition.

With a theme this year of “The Heights of Fashion,” six historic homes and mansions with full holiday decorations are on view. With Thanksgiving on its latest possible date this year, it might be taking you a while to think beyond it to putting up the tree and hanging the lights. To get you in the holiday mood and inspire your own decorating, special seasonal tours through neighborhood homes and landmark residences could well be what you need to start ornamenting your own abode. I speak from personal experience—to completely toss my Santa’s Little Movie Critic hat off to the side—when I say that for queer people, kissing at the holidays is a Major Statement. I, personally, have never kissed my husband in front of anyone in my family, and definitely not at Christmas.

Visitors can tour the ranch house and environs decorated for the holidays while listening to seasonal music and enjoying refreshments. Organizers and homeowners have been working for weeks, sometimes months, decking the halls of these tour spots. Many of these events are big fundraisers for local charities, and some have been around for decades. Here’s a look at what’s planned in Southern California, by geographic area. Christmas is one of the best times of year to visit Los Angeles. The city's mild climate allows you to enjoy outdoor activities like paying a visit to one of the many amusement parks, shopping at the Grove outdoor shopping mall, or strolling through one of the holiday markets.

The Christmas House is a made-for-television film produced for the Hallmark Channel. A Christmas-themed comedy-drama, it was directed by Michael Grossman. If watching Jake and Brandon be a committed, loving, fun, healthy couple allows even one couple to be allowed to express their earnest, unfiltered love for each other in front of their families at this time of year, then it was all worth it. It was a day like any other — the day my home was engulfed by fire.

Arrest made in fatal hit-and-run in Santa Ana

One woman said she doesn’t mind the lights, but the crowds can get a bit annoying. Albert Saldovar of La Habra said his 27-year-old son, Damian, recently watched “Christmas Vacation” for the first time. His parents looked on and chuckled as he stood in awe of the display. Norton jokes that he and his wife divorced, not over the Griswold display, but because of his “childlike actions.” He says his daughters love the transformation of the home, but they think he’s a bit crazy.

But of all the performances in the movie, you have to give it up to Sharon Lawrence who, as the Mitchell matriarch, is the film’s emotional center. She sells the gravity of Phyllis’ inner struggle long before you know what’s going on, and it gives the movie weight. The entire Mitchell clan is called in to send the Christmas House tradition out in style, including Mike, his brother Brandon (Bennett), and Brandon’s husband Jake (Brad Harder).

The event, marking its 50th year, features six homes as well as historic Asistencia with its rustic Spanish chapel. The homes are a range of architectural styles, from modern to traditional, and feature elaborate holiday decorations. There is also a Holiday Boutique fundraiser open to the public and featuring artisan vendors, from 9 a.m. Dec. 7-8 at the Redlands Y, 500 East Citrus Ave., Redlands. Rossmoorwomansclub.com The self-guided tour features five seasonally decorated, remodeled homes in the community of Rossmoor. The event, produced by the Rossmoor Woman’s Club, has been a neighborhood tradition and community fundraiser for more than 30 years.

Docent-led tours take visitors through the home’s rooms filled with seasonal décor. Admission includes refreshments and access to the Garden Boutique. The decoration of dueling Christmas houses serves as the backdrop for a lot of new complications in the extended Mitchell family. It’s another Christmas with the Mitchell family, so you know it’s going to be eventful. The holiday tour is just one of just two times a year that the 1898 Castle Green landmark throws open its gates to the public.

Visitors can enjoy its blend of Moroccan and Victorian architecture while walking through the original public rooms as well as more than 25 condominiums decorated for the season. The Penthouse and the property’s iconic bridge can also be viewed. The West Adams Heritage Association presents its 33rd annual holiday tours in the West Adams Heights subdivision.

The mortgage comparison experts at money.co.uk got together for this study and looked into how much the houses from classic Christmas films would cost to own, based on their size, location and nearby facilities. Self-guided tours are offered of three, privately owned Chino Hills homes fully decorated for the holidays, presented by the Chino Hills Community Foundation. Visitors are invited to tour the 1844 adobe rancho house, decorated for the holidays, as well as learn about 19th century Christmas traditions, make old-fashioned crafts and meet Santa. Three days of tours featuring four distinctive homes in the South Bay offered by the Sandpipers volunteer organization as a fundraiser is now in its 27th year. A Holiday Market offers the works of local artisans and restaurants and is open to the public during tour hours at the Neptunian Woman’s Club, 920 Highland Ave., Manhattan Beach. Since 2018, Norton has wowed neighbors and visitors with his elaborate display, which glows like a Christmas beacon in the quiet, suburban neighborhood.

No one on earth or above asked me if I was ready for the shoulder shake. The morning started with a buzzy, two-minute car ride to my daughter’s school. It ended with us — me, my husband, our then 4-year old and 1-year-old — sharing a queen-size bed at my in-law’s house.
